Last on the Docket- Fold the Hankie for the Pocket

I am on the final few pages for my quiet book. The last pages are going to be on the inside of the cover. The last page says- “Last on the docket- Fold the Hankie for the Pocket”. Docket! Now that’s a word a 4 year old will understand, lol!

The pattern called for just a normal Hankie, but I knew I wanted something a bit more interactive.

When my children were little, I would draw magic folding paper designs for them. Have you ever done that? They are so fun, and the kids love them!

Fold your paper first and draw a design. Unfold and connect the design. Unfold again and finish connecting again. Easy!

So I set to designing my folding Hankie by drawing my design and then sewing it onto fabric. It is really, really easy to do this sort of reverse appliqué.

Here is my hankie design-

  • Trace the design onto a paper towel and placed it on the back of the fabric.
  • On the front of the fabric, cover the area you want to sew with a scrap of fabric slightly larger than the leaf or stem you want to sew
  • Stitch on the back side.

  • Sew the underneath pieces first, such as the petals before the centers of the flower.
  • On the front side, sew over the stitching to secure.
  • Trim the fabric around the stitching .

  • Pull the paper towel away
  • Sew a backing piece around the entire hankie with right sides together. Make sure to leave a hole for turning.
  • Turn it right side out, and edge stitch all around.

Now for the fun part.–

  • Fold the Hankie in half right sides together and heavily press
  • While folded, fold the top back on itself halfway again . Press
  • Fold the right edge to meet the left edge. Press
    Fold the top back on itself again,

The flower magically grows or shrinks with each fold. Isn’t that cute?! Maybe I should say, “How SWEET” is that?!”

  3. I have really enjoyed reading about every page in this quiet book as you’ve created it…. each one is amazing. Thank you for being so generous with your ideas and creativity. This is definitely on my list of things to make – my granddaughter would love one.
