Quilt As You Go Pot Holders

It’s Christmas time again and that means it’s time for gift giving. I love making SWEET little gifts for my friends and neighbors. This year I decided to make potholders from 2.5″ strips of fabric. They turned out so cute and were super easy!

I used fabric from my stash, but a jelly roll would work great as well.

Supplies—

Makes 4 potholders

  • 12 – 2.5″ width of fabric strips of fabric
  • 12 – 2.5″ strips of cotton batting
  • Coordinating fabric for binding cut into 2.5″ strips

Directions–

  • Take one strip and one batting strip to the sewing machine.
  • Fold the edges in to meet each other
  • Fold in half again

  • Sew 1/4″ from edge to close the strip

You will get 12 beautiful strips like these.

  • Place strips close together and Zig zag edges together

  • Continue zig-zagging strips until they are all sewn together.

  • Cut your long quilted strip into four 8.5″ squares

They look so pretty all nicely stacked and ready for binding:)

Now it is time to bind.

  • Fold your 2.5″ binding fabric in half
  • Sew around pot holders as you would a quilt. If you would like a binding tutorial, you can go here.

There you have it! They are all so neat and tidy and ready for gift giving. I like to give mine with cooking utensils or a loaf of fresh baked bread. Yum!

    13. I am SO glad I found this page! I’m a great starter, but not so much a finisher! I think I can stick with this project! A few a day & I will have presents for next year! I will be a T-Sweets follower starting today!

      1. Hi Doreen!- I use scraps from my cotton quilt batting, but I would not hesitate to use any scraps of any other blend. These are my favorite pot holders.     17. Sad 😢 Zigzagging my strips together and it started curving so I started sewing strips onto the other side, still curving. Can’t figure out where I went 😑 So much work to make strips for what I thought would be simple potholders. Now it’s starting to look like I’m making a small round floor rug 😢

      1. Hi Victoria- I am happy you are trying these cute potholders. They really are my favorite. Try sewing up one side and down the other. —. Even with a curve, once you trim the potholder to size and square it up, it will be perfectly fine. It may even add a bit of movement and interest!:). I hope you don’t give up. Really- your pot holders will be the best ones😊❤️

    20. I love these and intend to make some, as they’re so cute. My question is why are you starting with 12.5″ strips if you square the piece to 8.5″? Four inches is a lot of fabric…

    24. I’m a quilter! I have lots of fabric & Batting. Going to whip up a few of these to give out to friends and family the next few days. Might make some matching hot pads too. Thanks for the great idea.
