With Thanksgiving coming up this week, I have started planning our Thanksgiving meal. We always want pumpkin and apple pie. I checked my pantry for apples and saw that I only had one bottle left. Oh no!! It was time to can some more.
Luckily, apples were on sale this week. That was convenient:). I bought a case of Gala Apples along with a bag of Granny Smith, and got started.
I have a recipe that I have used for years.
Canning Apple Pie Filling
- 4 1/2c sugar
- 2tsp cinnamon
- 1/4tsp nutmeg
- 1tsp salt
- 1c cornstarch
- 1c flour
- 9c water
- 1/2c Karo Syrup
Combine dry ingredients in a very large stockpot. Slowly pour in water while stirring to avoid lumps. Add Karo syrup. Bring to a boil over high heat . Boil 2-3 min until very thick. Don’t over stir. The syrup will get thick with small gelatous clumps of yum,
Turn to low and start peeling the apples. Use a metal peeler/slicer to peel, slice and core your apples.
If you have never used one of these slicers before, you are going to be amazed. I sliced my whole box of apples in about an hour. Whew!!
Add the sliced apples to the warm syrup. Stir to coat. Fill jars with apples. Wipe the lip of the jar after filling.
Boil the flat canning lids in water for 5 minutes. Place them on the filled jars and screw them down with the top of the lid. Place the apples in a hot water bath. Boil 20 min for pints and 30 min. for quarts.
Don’t you just love a counter stacked with jars of fresh food? I don’t can a ton of items, but when I do, I tend to leave them on my counter for a few days just to enjoy the look of them:)❤️
I have so much to be Thankful for, and I know you do too. Happy Thanksgiving!!
